We have a sale beginning today on Nettle Meadow Farm and Artisan Cheeses, with discounts on Kunik buttons, Kunik minis, and Chevre. Kunik is a triple crème wheel made from goat’s milk and cow cream. It won a Second Place finish at the 2019 U.S. Cheese Championships and a Good Food Award in 2018.
Founded in 1990, Nettle Meadow Sanctuary Farm is the home to well over 100 farm sanctuary animals and a cheese company in Thurman, New York just below Crane Mountain in the Adirondacks. It is owned and operated by Lorraine Lambiase and Sheila Flanagan, both of whom have a great love of animals, artisan cheese and the unique challenges of farm life.
Their herd of working goats currently reside closer to Amsterdam where there are 100s of acres of pasture and multiple large barns for a happy grass fed production life. Many of those critters return to the farm in retirement. At Nettle Meadow the sanctuary animals are housed in six large barns and a few outbuildings including a newly newly restored barn built in 1903 and restored in 2013. Not a bad way to spend retirement!
Our favorite part about the farm sanctuary is that they name their animals to fit their personality. Meet Nuts for example:
Nuts lives up to her name. She is always in high spirits rushing around the pasture and is known for her funny faces. She is always so happy it rubs off on everyone around her. She is also very compassionate. When her sister was injured she stayed with her in a stall for weeks and weeks and never complained about the confinement. Nuts has a warm place in everyone’s heart at Nettle Meadow.
A love of animals is at the core of the farm, and if you would like to learn more about supporting their sanctuary you can visit them here. Oh, and they also make world class cheese too! Check out our sale by heading here.
